Dumitru Alaiba

“Dumitru Alaiba is a Member of the Moldovan Parliament since 2019. He is a strong supporter of Moldova’s European and Euro Atlantic integration, passionate about human rights and dedicated to promote democracy and rule of law in his home country. Dumitru is an economist and project manager, educated in Moldova and Finland with work experience in five EU countries. Dumitru is convinced that Moldova is a textbook example of how corruption, if not tackled on time, can destroy a democracy and compromise its modernisation completely. 

Dumitru has started his career in international consultancy, then, as a pro-european government just took office, he returned to Moldova to join the public service. 

In 2013 he established the Prime minister’s Economic Council, an initiative supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development - a unit in Prime minister’s office to push for faster deregulation, transparency of the business environment, advocate for the rights of the entrepreneurs. In the meantime, Moldova has become world famous for outrageous acts of corruption. 

Dumitru quit his job in 2016, not wishing to be part of an increasingly authoritarian and kleptocratic government. In 2017 he co-founded CPR Moldova, an anticorruption watchdog NGO which quickly became one of the most vocal and active NGOs in Moldova. CPR was active in monitoring and exposing government actions and inactions in investigating high-level corruption („the theft of the billion), assessing the quality and real impact of the reforms, defending and advancing transparency, human rights, and democratic freedoms. CPR also advocated for an international investigation of financial crimes and an international asset recovery effort, international sanctions against the perpetrators of state capture in Moldova, individuals responsible for high-level corruption, human rights abuses in Moldova, including those who have been obstructing investigations.
