Biography
I am a political sociologist researching human rights, censorship, and social control. I defended my PhD in sociology at the University of Cambridge (2019), and hold a PhD in sociological theory and methods from the Higher School of Economics (2016). I also hold an MA in International Relations from the Free University Berlin and a BA in history from the University of Virginia. In 2019, I joined the University of Helsinki as a postdoctoral researcher on the GULAGECHOES project, funded by the European Research Council, where I work on social control in the context of prison systems and punishment. I have undertaken qualitative field research in Germany, Estonia, Ukraine, and Russia, and have published results in peer-reviewed academic journals such as The British Journal of Sociology, Current Sociology, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Punishment and Society, and Nationalities Papers. I have written op-eds for The New York Times, Politico, HuffPost, and other outlets, and the results of my work have been featured on the BBC, Quartz, The New Republic, The Moscow Times, Meduza, and The Washington Post.
